Video Poker is now available in so many more varieties than it used to be, this article takes you through the rules and strategy for Aces and Eights.
Aces and Eights Rules
There may be many variations of Video Poker, but the basics are pretty much the same in each version including Aces and Eights.
When playing Aces and Eights Video Poker you need to choose your stake – this is normally done by selecting the value of a coin and then how many coins (up to 5) you bet with.
After this, there will be a Deal button which will give you 5 cards from a standard 52 card deck. Some variations give you less to start and some use more than one deck or extra cards, not Aces and Eights though.
There is one standard 52-card deck in play and you receive 5 cards.
You then need to choose how many to discard – this can be 0 if you have a great hand or all 5 if you don't.
Once the cards you have discarded have been replaced, your hand is paid out according to the pay table.
For Ace and Eights, the minimum need for a payout is a Pair of Jacks or better (it is a very similar game to the Jacks or Better version of Video Poker).
You need to know the basic poker hand ranks before you start – these will be the same for all versions of Video Poker and can be found elsewhere on this site.
The above is an example of a standard online Aces and Eights Video Poker game.
You will see the look and feel is very similar to many other versions.
The main difference, which we go over below, is the increased payouts for 4 of a Kind Aces and 8's – hence the name – and to a slightly lesser extent, 4 of a Kind 7's.
Like many versions of Video Poker, there are also enhanced payouts when playing with 5 coins.
We would always recommend playing with 5 coins whenever your budget allows if necessary drop down the value of the coin to compensate.
As an example, if you wish to play €1 a game, you can do so by choosing the coin value as €1.00 and playing one coin. However, a much better option would be to play with the coin value as €0.20 and playing with five coins.

- Decide at the start of a session how much you want to play with and stick to it. Try and even the amount out over at least 40 different bets to give you a good chance of getting a win – remember all little wins will get added to your balance so you can play with those too – but if you lose the balance you were happy to start with, walk away. If you start trying to chase your losses and try to win it back, you could end up gambling with a far larger amount than you are comfortable with and put yourself in financial difficulty.

Recently, I've had more and more people ask how I build my Aces & Eights build because it's one that I run with quite often in the raid. I've gotten quite a lot of success running it as a regular raid build, on the verge of it being a speedrun build, so I wanted to share my experience with it, my philosophy on using it and how I've set some of the pieces up. It's extremely important to note that this is my way of building it suiting my playstyle with it. Other players have preferences on what they like their attributes to be, different ways to play it and by all means, theirs is completely valid. The goal here is to bring newer Aces & Eight players on a singular method to build it and be effective in the raid/missions/etc. With TU6 dropping as well, Aces & Eights might become an even more important build with the changes to Lucky Shot but more importantly, it will be 4 pieces instead of 6 which will make this method of building it more of a starting point than a polished build.
My philosophy on this build is that it's not meant to be a damage build but a support build. I have tweaked the build to have more damage to help with speedruns but for the newer Aces & Eights players, I believe it's meant to keep the team alive and for others to pump out as much damage as possible. I originally had more blue attributes to it but as I learned how to stay alive with it, I've been able to change to more red attributes for the build (Example: Going from 2 blue and 1 red on the chest piece to 2 red and 1 blue.)
The weapons are fairly standard with this build. I have an SVD as my primary and the Nemesis as my secondary for the holstered talent of additional headshot damage. I'm not too concerned with the handgun's holstered talent but something that has Transmission on it is helpful for the drones at Razorback. The talents on my SVD are the stars here where Lucky Shot and Extra are must-haves as shown in the screenshot below (Along with my damage, armor and health.)
The mods on the guns are the EXP3 Holo Sight (For the Damage to Elites), The Tightly Packed Marksman Mag (For the extra ammo), The Laser Pointer (For the Crit Hit Chance) and the Omega 7.62 Rifle Suppressor (For the Stability.) Notice that the talents on the gun and the mods, for the most part, do one thing, they give me more ammo or allow me to put out more bullets on the target. That's my goal with this build, putting bullets on enemies. The entire point of this build is to flip the cards on the build which gives the extra bonuses. No bullets, bad aim, no cards. Simple. Sure you could crush one NPC for 5 million damage with your Nemesis or Tac 50 although I would rather have all 8 players in the raid to either be protected (With 4 of a Kind,) have Double ammo (Full House) or double damage for 5 bullets (Aces & Eights.)
For the pieces themselves, I will go with weapon damage first above all other attributes and critical chance second. Headshot damage and critical hit damage are talents I will avoid. You might think I'm crazy not putting headshot damage and crit hit damage on my build. I come back to what the point of the build is which is to put bullets on the target. If I spend a ton of time aiming with my Nemesis and killing one target, I'm losing precious seconds getting more cards flipped to help my team out. Sure I might blow one target away with one bullet although I could be giving all three buffs to my team in the same amount of time that I aim one target. Here's a video of the cards flipping in rapid succession on Buddy demonstrating exactly this idea.
I also want a large amount of health because even if I get hit by a gold sniper dog or I get in a bad situation where I generate a lot of aggro, my armor bar is going to be torn to shreds no matter how much armor I have but my health will keep my going. I'm making up my armor by having some extra armor mods on my armor pieces but health is everything. The individual pieces have the following attributes to them:

- Chest: Health, Crit Hit Chance and Weapon Damage
- Holster: Crit Hit Chance and Crit Hit Damage
- Backpack: Health, Armor, Weapon Damage
- Gloves: Marksman Rifle Damage, Crit Hit Chance or Health
- Kneepads: Crit Hit Chance
This is a method of building Aces & Eights that I've found useful and successful in the raid and other scenarios.
